The topic of the present research project is “Developing Communicative Competence in English at the Undergraduate Level” .The researcher forms two hypotheses (i) The new techniques and materials are more beneficial than the traditional teaching techniques or materials (ii) The achievement level of the learners in the Experimental Group will be higher than the achievement level of the learners in the Control Group. The researcher also takes four objectives in his research journey i.e. (i) To produce materials in accordance with the learners needs (ii) To try out the materials to enhance students' ability of communication (iii) To bridge the gap between the language used in the class room and the language used in society (iv) To encourage and motivate the learners to create a liking for English language through several responsive and interesting activities.
The research belongs to field research, therefore, the researcher carried out survey kind of research. He has got the help of two resources - Primary Resources and Secondary Resources. In primary resources, he has made his own research tools like - questionnaire - students' questionnaire, Teachers' questionnaire, comprehension passages, Pre-Test, Post-Test, Students' feed-back sheets and achievement Tests (10 Tasks). Under secondary resources, he has used the variety of reference books from the library.
The researcher has taken only thirty students for the research samples from M. B. Patel Rashtrabhasha Arts College, Ahmedabad situated in Gujarat. These thirty students belong to Undergraduate level of Bachelor of Arts (F.Y.B.A.) only. The students of F.Y.B.A. belong to both the mediums - Hindi and Gujarati medium. The researcher has chosen the experiment method in this research. The researcher has selected two groups: Experiment Group and Control Group.
In this research work, the researcher has assembled the best possible related material available for communicative English Language Teaching. With the help of which the researcher wants to make today's teachers realize that quality material is always over-looked for Indian learners. The learners' needs have always been ignored. The learners have to study English on the basis of foreign models. Consequently, the learners' learning process gets affected, several crevices loom largely and the learners feel fatigued and shun learning English.
What is to be noted here is that learners wish to learn English but they need to be taught English the way they want. The researchers, here, emphasizes on the learners Independence. The learners must be set free. And for this purpose the teachers have to deal the situation very strategically. The teachers will have to make materials in an Indianised way and the material must be used in the class. In fact, the learners shouldn't feel he is in any foreign country. The researcher pleads today's teachers that they can make materials easily. The teachers can take the help of surrounding objects and can make easy-to-grasp material. The teachers can take the help of advertisements, signs, symbols, signals, gestures and body language etc. All these can be utilized in forming communicative material of English.
Enhancing students' ability of learning communicative English is the prime aim of the teacher community. With this purpose in mind, the researcher has visited the issue in this research study. The researcher is well aware that such a small research work cannot solve all the issues but a well-begun is half done; with this sense of wisdom, the researcher hopes that the issue will be revisited by other more promising researchers and will be dealt with by variety of angles and methodologies.
